PLAY THE ANGLE
For a family who love entertaining and welcoming people into their home and garden, the architects designed a unique extension for this period home in Wanstead. Instead of simply putting a box to the back of the house, a slim, angled extension was added with full height glazing on both sides to capture the natural light.
Blending old and new, this single-storey extension was crafted using a steel frame and reclaimed bricks to stay true to the home’s original character. Inside, handmade brick tiles flow effortlessly out to the patio, echoing the extension’s angular lines and creating a seamless connection between indoors and out, perfect for summer living. Large triple-track doors glide open with ease, inviting light and garden views into the heart of the home. In the kitchen, bespoke joinery keeps appliances tucked away and storage beautifully organised, allowing the space to feel calm and considered. A striking kitchen island anchors the room, finished with a waterfall-edge worktop, blackened steel panelling, and a discreet downdraft hob for fuss-free cooking. Slatted oak panels conceal a stylish downstairs bathroom and extra storage, keeping the aesthetic clean and cohesive. Pocket doors open onto the living room, where original timber floors have been lovingly restored, flowing from one space to the next and tying the whole home together with a sense of quiet continuity.
